School of Culture Resources of TNUA is organising the 6th Brown Bag Forum on 6/2 (Mon), 12:30-13:30, on the 4/F, Research Building, TNUA.
The topic of the forum is “Community Engagement and Artist Residency: Perspective from the US and Taiwan”. The forum is presented by Edward Lu, Student, International MA Program in Studies of Art and Creative Industries, and moderated by Meng-Yu Lai, Assistant Professor, International MA Program in Studies of Arts and Creative Industries.
In recent years, artist residencies around the world have increasingly incorporated elements of community engagement into their programs. In spite of their reputation as isolated retreats, artist residencies are being embraced by governments and grassroots communities alike as an important means of social development, placemaking, and identity formation. Contemporary artist residencies are often highly collaborative and interactive experiences that provide tangible benefits to host communities and frame the relationship between art and society in new and exciting ways. As such, they are implicated in a variety of complex trends and issues, both local and global.
This presentation covers the main trends and issues associated with community engagement in the context of contemporary artist residencies. It examines the practical and symbolic impact of artist residencies on various host communities, from urban neighborhoods to rural townships. In particular, it focuses on the role that artist residencies play in shaping discourses on colonialism, cultural identity, and natural heritage. The presenter will draw from his experiences as a researcher, residency organizer, and artist-in-residence in the US and Taiwan.
